What is ECERS?
The Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale (ECERS) is a trusted, research-based tool used to assess the quality of learning environments for children ages 3–5. Developed by early childhood education experts, ECERS provides clear standards to help teachers, administrators, and program directors create safe, engaging, and developmentally appropriate classrooms for preschool and pre-kindergarten learners.
ECERS evaluates multiple aspects of a learning environment, including:
- Space and Furnishings: Child-sized furniture, accessible storage, and well-defined learning areas
- Personal Care Routines: Healthy, hygienic practices for meals, toileting, and rest times
- Language and Literacy: Opportunities for conversation, storytelling, reading, and writing
- Learning Activities: Arts and crafts, STEM exploration, dramatic play, and fine motor skill development
- Interaction: Positive teacher-child relationships that support cooperation, empathy, and social skills
- Program Structure: Daily schedules and routines that balance group activities, individual learning, and play
High ECERS scores reflect classrooms where children are supported in all areas of development, including cognitive, social-emotional, and physical growth. By using ECERS-aligned materials, educators can ensure their spaces meet quality standards while creating rich, inspiring environments for every learner.
At Discount School Supply, we make it simple to find ECERS-compliant products — from dramatic play sets and literacy tools to furniture, sensory activities, and art supplies — all designed to help you succeed in your next evaluation.
